Chhattisgarh is a newly formed state (came into existence on November 1, 2000) in central India. The state came into existence when chhattisgarhi speaking districts of the then largest state Madhya Pradesh was carved out and given separate statehood. Raipur is the capital and the largest city in Chhattisgarh. 44% of Chhattisgarh is under forest cover and the state is rich in mineral resources and biodiversity. Chhattisgarh is in the effort of becoming a bio-fuel sufficient state and become a bio-diesel hub and for this Jatropha plants are being cultivated extensively.

Chhattisgarh Language

Chhattisgarhi and Hindi are the two official languages of Chhattisgarh. The prominent language of Chhattisgarh - Chhattisghari, is a dialect of eastern Hindi. One third of Chhattisgarh's population is tribal and therefore many tribal languages and Dravidian influenced dialects are common in different parts of the state.

Chhattisgarh Geography

Chhattisgarh is located 17° 46' north to 24° 5' north latitude and from 80° 15' east to 84° 20' east longitude. The state is located at the central part of India and has a total area of 135194 Sqkm. Chhattisgarh is surrounded by Orissa in the east, Maharashtra in the west, Andhra Pradesh in south, Madhya Pradesh in the North West and Jharkhand in the north east. Almost 44% of Chhattisgarh is covered by forests and is one of the richest bio-diversity habitats in India. The northern part of Chhattisgarh lies on the edge of the great Indo-Gangetic plain, central part of the state lies in the fertile upper basin of the Mahanadi and its tributaries and the southern part of the state lies on the Deccan plateau. Mahanadi is the main river in Chhattisgarh and Iravati, Hasdeo, Rihand etc..., are other major rivers.

Chhattisgarh Climate

Chhattisgarh has a Tropical Climate. Chhattisgarh is a land locked state and its distance from the sea, altitude and its position on the tropic of cancer have influenced the state's climate. Uncomfortably hot climate, dry winds and temperature over 40°C are the characteristics of summers in Chhattisgarh. During winter, Chhattisgarh is moderately cold with the temperature falling slightly below the 10°C mark. Rainy season starts from middle and late June to October and Chhattisgarh depends on the South West Monsoon for rains.
