History of Jharkhand

In the view of the writers like Gautam Kumar Bera even before the period of Magadha's there existed a different geo-political, Cultural entity named Jharkhand. Kukara was the name given to Jharkhand during the Mughal Period.

During 1765 under the British Supremacy the state was known under the present title ie, Jharkhand which literally means "the land of forests and bushes". The conquest and colonization of Jharkhand by the British East India Company paved the way to resistance from the local inhabitants. The Adivasis of Jharkhand revolted against the British Colonial rule even before the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. The santhals under the leadership of Tilaka Manjhi were the warriors of the revolt which was faught during 1771-1900 AD. The uprisings under the leadership of Tilaka Manji were suppressed by the British Government by sending its troops. But the glowing mind of the Bhumji tribes who saw the cruelty of the British against their brothers revolted back in 1779 at Manbhum, present West Bengal. The thirst to restore the land of their ancestors from the clutches of the landlords increased in their mind daily and the revolt spread along rapidly among one tribe to other. Soon after the revolt of Manbhum tribes Chero' s came forward and during AD 1800 - AD 1807 they revolted against the British. Followed by them came the Oraons and from there it was spread towards the East and they revolted during the period of 1811-1813.1820 saw the open revolts of Hos in Singhbum against landlords and British troops called Larka Kol Risings 1820-1821. Followingly came the greatKol Risings of 1832 that made the British upset.

Later came the Santhal Uprising of 1855 headed by the two brothers Sidhu and Kanhu who faught against the British bitterly but their fate too was the same as their brothers. Birsa Munda Revolt of 1895-1900 was the revolt that broke out next it became the largest and greatest tribal revolts. It also turned out as the last tribal revolt.

During 20th century Jharkhand saw a moderate approach rather than the bloody revolts of 19th century. With the declaration of the Chhotanagpur Tenancy Act of 1908 that Offers Protection to their lands the tribal leaders began concentrating over their socio- economic Development strategies. Tana Movement was started in 1914 by Jatra Oraon later in 1920 it merged with the freedom movement of Mahatma Gandhi, having a political view. In 1928 when the Simon Commission arrived at Patna the Chhotanagpur Unnati Samaj requested for its need to set up an independent state for the tribals. Their request for an independent state was not acceded by the Simon Commission and these paved way to the organizing of the Kisan Sabha in 1931. Further Kisan Sabha and Theble Oraon organized with their view to get hold of the political power. To gain the foothold the movement changed its outlook for almost six decades. Their thirst to attain political foothold became successful and they came out as a stronger political party but the need for a separate independent state was rejected by the various commissions. All these didn't reduced their spirit to fight for an independent state and it became a reality on 15 November 2000.
